In 1994, we booked a flight over on a whem from Athens in March when it was cold and overcast and rented a jeep and drove around and wondered why we spent all that money (https://my-jc.blog/1994/03/16/mykonos-1994/). This trip we planned ahead and booked our only “unofficial” excursion (e.g. not through the ship – so a little riskier on missing departures on both ends) as a sailing trip to Delos island and some snorkeling. This visit was much better – probably 50 degrees warmer.
Delos
We had about a 30 minute sail to Delos. Delos was one of the few Greek ports that the Romans allowed to continue to trade so it was pretty wealthy and the ruins were much more extensive than we expected. Delos is also famous for cats who were brought in to get rid of the snakes and a lot of cats still there.

Rineia
We then sailed to Rineia – and the wind had picked up and it was a little more exciting trip over. Water was very clear and the area had light colored rocks so we had turquoise blue water and the snorkeling was ok as the “reef” was a pile of rocks and no fish bigger than about 4 inches.. However, when they threw the uneaten lunch overboard, a bunch of big carp like fish swarmed – wouldn’t have been enjoyable to swim with them.

Mykonos
We then headed back to Mykonos where we had a couple of hours and wandered the streets a bit. It is basically a shopping place during the day and (apparently) a party place a night – we left back to the ship before the party started.
